Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
-
PCIT engages both parents and children to better the child-parent relationship and to assist parents in learning important skills in effectively handling their child’s behavioral difficulties.
-
PCIT has two treatment components. During the first phase, relationship enhancement, clinicians coach parents/guardians on improving positive and supportive communication. PCIT sessions use live parent coaching through a one way mirror and earpiece, or via a secure telehealth platform.
The second phase, Strategies to Improve Compliance, teaches parents/guardians empirically validated and effective child-management skills. Parents/guardians practice these skills until they have been mastered and the child’s behavior improves.
PCIT is identified as one of the most effective forms of evidence-based therapy for young children with behavioral complexities. Studies have shown that positive treatment outcomes are sustained well over time and reduce caregiver stress, while enhancing family dynamics.
